Dental Crowns

What is a Dental Crown?

A dental crown, also known as a cap, is a type of protective tooth restoration that 'caps' or covers a damaged or decayed tooth to try and restore its original shape, size and colour. Crowns should improve the strength, function and appearance of a broken tooth that may otherwise be lost.

The Crown Procedure

Crowns are usually needed when there is insufficient tooth structure remaining to hold a filling.

Unlike fillings, which apply restorative material directly into your mouth, a crown is fabricated away from your mouth.

Your crown is created in a lab from your unique tooth impression, which allows a dental laboratory technician to examine all aspects of your bite and jaw movements.

Your crown is then sculpted for you so that your bite and jaw movements function normally once the crown is placed.

The Benefits of Dental Crowns | Toothworks Dental Clinics

The Benefits of Crowns

Dental crowns cover damaged teeth and protect them from any future issues. They can be used in dental procedures to cover a tooth after a root canal or to attach a dental bridge

If you need a filling replaced but your natural tooth is too small, your dentists may crown it. Your dentist may also use a crown to cover a crooked or discoloured tooth to improve your aesthetics.

Crowns should be strong because they are made of porcelain which should protect and strengthen the remaining tooth structure.
