Dentistry for the Entire Family: How Dental Services Differ by Age

Dentistry for the Entire Family: How Dental Services Differ by Age

In this post, our Toronto dentists (from our Richmond-Adelaide Dental, King-York Dental, Brookfield Place Dental, Bay Adelaide Dental and College Park Dental locations) explain the ins and outs of family dentistry and how we help kids, teens, adults and seniors keep their smiles healthy.

How do dental services change for me and my family over time?

Kids

Regular dental care is essential for kids, to help them set a stable foundation for oral health throughout their life. We provide a wide range of dental services for children at our five Toronto locations.

Beginning with their initial visit (ideally at six months) all through their school-aged years, we work with children to keep their smile healthy. We provide regular exams and cleanings, and review good techniques for preventive hygiene at each appointment to make sure their teeth get appropriate attention and good dental hygiene practices.

For kids at a higher risk than average of tooth decay, or for those that have special circumstances, restorative dental services or customized treatment plans might be recommended.

Teens

As teens grow and become more independent, their dental care will need to develop with them. Preventive dental care will continue as they see the dentist around every 9 months.

Many teens are concerned about their appearance and having a healthy, white smile. We will educate them about the connection between dental hygiene practices and the appearance of their smiles.

If they need orthodontic care, teens will be referred to an orthodontist for an assessment and may require treatment with a retainer, braces, clear aligners or other appliance.

Adults

As adults, many people develop early stage gum disease, potentially resulting in oral health issues like painfully swollen gums. Preventive care should continue to be top of mind for adults, including regular visits to the dentists for hygiene cleanings alongside at-home care.

Many people will need their wisdom teeth removed in early adulthood. Sometimes, specialized care, oral surgery, appliances or other treatments will be recommended for TMJ Disorder, sleep apnea, or other specific issues.

If restorative services such as fillings, crowns or bridges are required, we are happy to offer these and address any questions and concerns you have.

Seniors

Your mouth and teeth will naturally change as you age. You may also have new needs in terms of medications. This can increase your risk for developing dental health problems, including:

  • Tooth decay or cavities
  • Dry mouth (caused by medications)
  •  Gum disease or periodontitis
  • Need for tooth replacements or dentures
  • Oral cancer

The nerves in your teeth can shrink as you get older. So, you may notice your teeth are getting less sensitive to things like pain from cavities or hot or cold temperatures. If gum tissue recedes, however, this could cause your teeth to become more sensitive as root tissue becomes exposed.

Wear on your tooth enamel and the buildup of plaque can leave you susceptible to other problems. A dentist can examine your smile and help address these by recommending appropriate treatments such as dental implants, restorative services, a gum graft, gum therapy or oral surgery.
