What is a Tooth Extraction?
A tooth extraction is the removal of a tooth from its socket in the bone. Extractions are normally only performed when a less invasive option would be ineffective, or if keeping the tooth will compromise your oral health.

Reasons for a Tooth Extraction
Common reasons for pulling a tooth include excessive tooth damage and problematic wisdom teeth. Teeth are also sometimes pulled to prepare for other dental procedures.
Problematic Wisdom Teeth
Wisdom teeth emerge later in life, and can be problematic when they grow in the wrong positions or there simply isn't enough room for them in the mouth. Wisdom teeth may become impacted, or may not erupt fully. In these cases, having them extracted can help preserve your oral health.
Extensive Damage
Sometimes, a tooth may be too badly damaged to save as a result of dental decay or gum disease, or of an injury to the tooth. In these cases, the tooth will likely need to be extracted.

The Extraction Procedure
Today, tooth extractions should be less painful than before thanks to the use of anesthetics and sedatives.
Sometimes, a patient who has a tooth pulled experiences little or no discomfort, and only minor bleeding.
Before a tooth is extracted, the area surrounding the tooth is numbed with a topical/and or injectable anesthetic for patient comfort.
Once a tooth has been removed, your dentist will discuss your options for replacements, such as dentures and bridges.
