April is Oral Health Month

Did you know that April is Oral Health Month? Each Spring dental professionals take the opportunity to remind Canadians about the importance of their oral health.

While most of us realize the benefits of a healthy diet, regular exercise and a good night’s sleep, people far too often underestimate the importance of having optimal oral health.

Research is showing correlations between periodontal disease and heart disease, and bacteria is believed to be the culprit. These bacteria living in the mouth can enter the bloodstream making their way to the heart and to the formation of cardiovascular disease.

Heart disease is not the only illness linked to poor oral health. Diabetics for instance are more likely to have periodontal disease, and it’s believed that the relationship between the two conditions goes both ways. Severe periodontal disease can increase blood sugar leading to increased risk for diabetes complications.

Suffice it to say, your oral health should be taken seriously. Regular visits to the dentist and a routine schedule of preventative oral hygiene appointments are the first line of defence against these risk factors. For more information on maintaining a healthy smile, The Canadian Dental Association lays out these 5 Steps to a Healthy Mouth on their website.

If it’s time for your spring cleaning, you can book an appointment at one of our many convenient locations across Southern Ontario.
